Michelle Griffin’s CASA Journey: from CASA volunteer
to Board Chair of California CASA
Michelle Griffin began her impactful journey with CASA as a consultant and as interim Chief Financial Officer with San Francisco CASA in 2008. In this role, she learned the ins and outs of finance and fundraising for a local CASA nonprofit, as well as about the lives of foster children and the important work of CASAs. She went on to become a member of the San Francisco CASA Finance Committee. Fast forward six years when Michelle was asked to be an educational rights holder for a foster youth in high school. Although she had some questions about taking on this new hands-on role, she had experience advocating for her son’s medical care in a public school setting.
Michelle worked with foster youth “Sean” and his CASA towards the educational goal of transferring him from a school that did not meet his needs to a more appropriate, traditional high school. “We succeeded, and Sean flourished in his new high school,” said Michelle. “I eventually became his CASA and enjoyed seeing him graduate and attend community college. It was so gratifying to earn his trust and help him achieve his goals and continue to be a happy, sociable, charming young man.”
With her leadership skills and broad CASA experiences, in 2019 Michelle was asked to join the California CASA Board of Directors and was elected Chair in 2022. “This is such an exciting and pivotal time for our organization. With the appropriation of $60 million in state funds over the next three years, we have the opportunity to truly move the dial for the entire CASA network and achieve our vision of serving every foster child in California who needs a CASA.”
Meaningful Volunteering
Michelle urges everyone to consider becoming a CASA volunteer. “It is a worthy investment in time to complete the training and although it’s not always easy work, those of us who are lucky enough to have good lives and the opportunity to pay it forward can support a child who hasn’t had the same benefits. Out of all the volunteer roles I’ve taken on with community organizations, being a CASA remains the most impactful volunteer work I’ve done.”
Among her many gratifying CASA experiences, one moment stands out to Michelle. “I had the privilege of attending Sean’s senior basketball night at school. When his name was called, he was accompanied by his CASA, and he presented a rose to her. The gym erupted in cheers and the audience began chanting his name! Sean had never before experienced these ‘typical’ high school milestones or received this level of acknowledgement from his peers. I will never forget the smile on his face!”
For supporters who may not be available to volunteer, Michelle urges them to consider financial support, “Making a donation and an investment in California CASA benefits the entire state by strengthening local programs that provide direct services.”
